Engage: The Visionary all-seeing Recruitment System from Blue Octopus

March 9th, 2011 by Jamie Rock

Blue Octopus, the no nonsense flat fee recruitment company has developed a visionary recruitment system specially created and designed for its clients to have an all seeing instantaneous view of all recruitment activity.

Uniquely, Engage Recruitment Technology™, allows a total and instantly updated overview of all job applicants: which to pursue, which to discard and which to put on hold. And it doesn’t stop there, each candidate’s details can be quickly accessed and it is ingeniously simple to use so there is no down time or expensive training.

Each client of Blue Octopus can have a tailor-made system which ensures they get just what they need. The old, agonising process of filtering paper applications is now firmly in the dustbin. Applicants apply online, get screened in the first instance and are managed through the recruitment process via the innovative Engage Recruitment Technology™. There is an effective traffic light system which takes minutes to assess.

Blue Octopus Joint Founder and Director, Chris Coleman says: “We have developed our Engage Recruitment Technology over the last few months specifically based on what our clients have told us they need to run an efficient HR and recruitment department. We tailor each system to absolutely match their requirements to ensure they have a highly efficient and speedy solution.”

Already one of the UK’s largest bed retailers, Sleepmasters, has bought into Engage and now use it to maintain its 650 strong workforce for recruiting. It currently has over 150 stores and a network of 4 distribution centres in England, Wales and Ireland, with its HQ in Accrington, all of which will be integrated into their new recruitment system.

Noel Jolly, Head of HR, Sleepmasters, says: “Sleepmasters has used E-recruitment as its primary source of filling vacancies for the past 5 years. We have found it essential for a retail business like ours to effectively recruit at the speed and in the quantity we need to remain successful and a leader in our field. Although systems have developed dramatically recently, Blue Octopus has revolutionised the way we now operate. By simply listening to what we need, they built a system that perfectly fits like our business and is of immense benefit, providing the key to employment success.

He continues “Our key issues and pressures were taken extremely seriously by the Blue Octopus programming team, with speed, flexibility and simplicity taking priority. We have a system that has reduced spend and crucially the time spent on recruitment for our Sales Managers. 2011 is the first year of the last eight where we have entered our busiest trading period fully staffed. The team at Blue Octopus has played a truly significant part with its levels of commitment, professionalism and advice, second to none, and are proud to say that Blue Octopus is our recruitment partner.”

Blue Octopus Software Solutions, a division of Blue Octopus Recruitment Limited is run by Talvinder Nagra along with his brother Sandeep. Blue Octopus Scoop ‘Most Improved Recruiter’ Accolade at the 2010 RecruitRank Awards

November 12th, 2010 by Jamie Rock

Blue Octopus

Online recruitment specialists Blue Octopus have been declared winners of the Most Improved Recruiter Award in the low volume Jobsite user category of the RecruitRank 2010 awards. The lavish event held on November 9th at Grace in central London represented a landmark for the Yorkshire based recruitment organisation – as they took home a coveted award having been the only company nominated as finalists in all 5 awards in their category.

Now in their 5th year, the RecruitRank awards are the only accolades in the recruitment industry which are judged solely on the experience and feedback of user’s of the nominees’ services. Founded and run by leading website Jobsite, the RecruitRank Awards represent a resounding thumbs up from the people that matter most: actual users. Award nominees are decided by direct consultation of the confidential feedback left by users of the recruitment organisation’s services through the Jobsite portal: making for a much more accurate analysis of relative strengths and weaknesses than is provided by a conventional panel of judges. The relevance of the awards is echoed by the sentiments of Jobsite CEO Keith Potts:

“With several thousand recruitment consultancies eligible for inclusion in the RecruitRank Awards every year, Blue Octopus stand out as an example of providing exceptional customer service. There is a lot we can learn from the RecruitRank Award winners, who epitomise best practice in the area of customer service. Jobsite congratulates Blue Octopus on their accolade.”

Speaking on behalf of the whole team at Blue Octopus, Director Chris Coleman said of the occasion:

“First of all it’s a fantastic achievement in becoming Finalists for all 5 categories but to win an award is such an honour and means the world to us as it’s based on 100% candidate feedback. We’d like to thank all our candidates for voting for Blue Octopus as without their votes we wouldn’t have been in this situation in the first place.

Here at Blue Octopus we take all feedback seriously, firstly as it helps us understand what parts of the recruitment process candidates find frustrating and motivates us to work hard on improving those areas and secondly because it’s a reminder of how our recruitment service is valued. We feel winning the Most Improved Award is an indication that our Attract & Engage Service along with our own family of recruitment systems (Engage Recruitment Technology) is certainly helping us in the right direction”

Blue Octopus and the recruitment industry at large eagerly await the challenges of the coming year and the opportunity to emerge victorious from next year’s RecruitRank Awards event.

The History of the Octopus

October 18th, 2010 by Jamie Rock

In order to provide you all with a full introduction to Blue Octopus I posed a few questions to Co-Founder/Director Liam Coleman. This first of several interviews will hopefully give you an insight into how and why Blue Octopus grew into one of the leading lights in online recruitment:

What initially lead you to pursue a career in recruitment?

After working in newspaper advertising for over four years, during which time I experienced how recruitment advertising worked in the press; I had the vision to take my career into recruitment as an industry. It wasn’t an easy route to market so to speak, as I preferred to aim for something different – away from agencies and newspapers. Recruitment is a sector that is non-obsolete, it does however move quickly, and technology plays a big part in the whole process whether you are the supplier, client or candidate. Personally I am very service driven and recruitment is all about service and people, which is everything I am interested in.

What inspired you to start Blue Octopus?

Having worked within the online recruitment market for a period of just over four years, Chris (Co-Founder and Director) and I believed we had found our niche. To have achieved so much and built up a great client base that was being sustained gave us that confidence you need to take your career in to your own hands, make your own decisions and move in the direction you want to go. Blue Octopus is the product of all that belief and dedication to fulfilling a dream to build something from the foundations into a nationally recognised brand. The future of Blue Octopus is very exciting and we have big plans that will materialise in good time.

How would you say that Blue Octopus differs from a standard recruitment agency?

The obvious differences are that with Blue Octopus there are no placement fees and there are no candidate databases compiled to cross market candidate’s details between various clients. With Blue Octopus you experience a transparent and dedicated managed service where we apply our skill and knowledge to each and every position we work on. Opposed to the placement fee we simply supply campaigns at a flat fee no matter what the level of salary is for the role. Last but not least we provide our clients with greater insight and control – building a long term relationship based on results and trust.

Do you see any big changes in the recruitment industry on the horizon?

I believe the industry is ready for a return to the busier times of the past. The good companies out there (like ourselves!) have the infrastructure to deal with greater volume when called upon. For me, 2011 could be the start of the recruitment market reviving itself once again as companies look to bring in new talent and replace leavers who have left a gap in the business – which can now be attended to without the constraints many have faced during the recession we have just come through.

Look out for more interviews with Liam and the other Blue Octopus Directors in the coming weeks…
